On May 31, 2005, the Chesapeake Nanotechnology Initiative was created by a memorandum of understanding signed by the Governor of Maryland, the Governor of Virginia, and the Mayor of the District of Columbia. Nanotechnology develops tiny devices at scales of less than 100 nanometers for use in medicine, information sciences, physics, and other research fields.

The purpose of the Chesapeake Nanotechnology Initiative was to accelerate the development of innovative nanotechnology products through regional collaboration. Because the area already had government research institutions and private industries working in micro-and nanotechnology, the Initiative promoted the cooperative use of resources to build on that leadership in nanotechnology commercialization, development, and growth.

The Steering Committee last met in December 2005. The Memorandum of understanding expired on December 31, 2005.
